We built a school!

buildOn at UCLA built our first school!

We are so excited to announce that through our individual and group fundraising efforts we were able to fundraise for a school in El Chamarro, Nicaragua. The fundraising efforts went towards the in-country engineers and some of the locally sourced materials. The community volunteered their land, other local materials, and time to construct the school - overall, they dedicated 451 volunteer work days to make this school come to life! BuildOn’s goal of gender equality was realized via these work days, as men and women worked alongside each other during construction. 65 students (26 boys and 39 girls) and three teachers will soon be attending and teaching at our school. Although we were not able to work with and meet the community to break ground on the school due to the pandemic, we are happy to view the photos from afar and marvel at the concrete results our hard work has produced.

Thank you to the community for caring deeply about the education and future of their children and for being empowered to lead this project. Thank you to all of our donors for helping us gather the funds to make this happen. Thank you for believing in the small new chapter we started at such a big school - it’s been quite the ride. We are so excited that we could contribute to the almost 2,000 schools that buildOn (as an organization) has helped build, as we firmly believe in buildOn’s mission that building schools to foster education is truly the way to break the cycles of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations. We hope that the community continues to be empowered, and that we continue to help empower others through education.
